Card and gift shop closing........

in downtown Harrisburg. Perks 'N Bribes, located at 225 N. Second St. has announced that they will be closing their doors forever January 31, 2008. Owner David Ferris blamed the closing on "poor sales and the disappearance of other retail shops on Second Street."

Now, this brings us to the proposed new federal courthouse for Harrisburg. The GSA has given Harrisburg the details of requirements of what is needed to build the courthouse at the 6th and Reilly Sts. location endorsed by Mayor-for-life Stephen Reed and local leaders. Some of the requirements are shopping, restaurants and offices. The Mayor has said before that would be no problem, etc., etc. Barbara Shelton, the GSA's regional director and a Harrisburg native has major doubts as to whether Reed can deliver on all his promises. I don't blame her on that one, a lot of people have their doubts as to whether Reed can deliver.

This all brings me to a really big question........if Reed can't attract and keep retail shops downtown, how in the hell is he going to do it at 6th and Reilly?

look at 3rd and reily...you could buy crack cocaine there 2 years ago, once they built that new HACC campus its over run with hipsters and wanna bes, reily cinema and garden viet rest have all increased their prices because of this. you think if they build a federal courthouse people wont try and go estabish themselves. reed has provided a lot of incentives, he has dedicated more time than anyone else. give him a break.

Dan r- I can only agree with you about Mayor Reed. NO ONE else could do his job. Most of the so-called competition are only aware of the issues that end up in the paper. However, I live near 3rd and Reily on Susquehanna St. In 9 years, I have NEVER seen illegal activity in our neighborhood. My eyes are not shut either. If you have an issue with 'hipsters;' and 'wanna bes', I feel sorry for you. It's called progress.

the only reason mayor reed want the federal court house at 6th and reily sts is that no one in their right mind would build anything of value in that area, due to the homeless shelter and the burned out convenience store at the corner, the drug and prostitution problems are and will always be there, even without the motel next door. if that land was worth anything it would have been developed years ago,i rest my case.
